My Script....

TAKE A SHOT: 2011

A well known fact it is, that the most challenging part in Politics is engaging in election process either by voting or being voted for. It is such a time when aspirants vying for political offices tend to relate efficiently with the electorates, disregarding whatever error(s) they might have made in the past prior to the approaching elections. At this stage, the people have the civic right (and duty) to make things work by voting in the credible leaders.

However, it is such an odd case where we observe during election processes especially here in Nigeria, we could be easily cajoled by cunning politicians who have no regard or feeling for our legitimate struggle. The year 2007 witnessed a caricature election which seemed more likely as mere appointments of certain persons to manage public portfolios in a society tagged as being democratic in its governance. Such was an obvious case taken into cognizance the unfortunate scenario when the supposed No.1 citizen of our dear nation (late Umaru Yar’Adua) confirmed the fraudulent “election” that ushered him onto the seat of power. It then leaves one to wonder what will evolve from future general elections in Nigeria if we could still not get it right at this level of over 50years since independence.
Again, we are approaching another round of general voting. As youths, we are believed to be existing under the widely known notion of “future leaders”, yet we have not reached the stage of maturity. Until we begin to evaluate things in a more practical manner, we might not effectively make the needed change.

The infamous recycling of politicians & rulers has been an issue not to be overlooked. Past Governors, Heads of State, Senators, Members of Reps….all forcing their way through onto the political scene. We cannot easily forget our own “Maradona” in his role of denying the most credible and fair election in the nation’s history, neither can we ignore the massive looting of national treasury by the Abachas; and I am still battling to understand the rationale behind Mohammad Abacha’s pursuit for Governorship in Kano state in 2011. Needless to mention such politicians who have compromised Integrity with Corruption and Selfish interests instead of Selfless service. The future seems bleak we cannot really get a prospective analysis of what the present time would translate to as regards the Nigeria polity.

Democracy is widely referred to as the system of governance of the people…by the people….for the people. Our society is blessed with adequate human & material resources if only appropriate utilization is maintained. Great intellects like Prof. Wole Soyinka, Gov. Adams Oshiomhole, Prof. Pat Utomi, to mention but a few have always believed in youths making a more vibrant positive change in the overall system. Not necessarily that you should belong to a certain political party or contest for a political portfolio; making your views known is one of the best of such ways to realizing the needed effects.

Now is the time to monitor the situation. The general election in 2011 is a collective responsibility because it may make or mar projections in a long time to come. Youths STAND UP! Unite as an indivisible entity and let’s make sure our votes genuinely count thus ensuring the magnification of our perspective to nation-building. We must see ourselves as worthy ambassadors for a better Nigeria…….AWWOOOHH!

Gistainment!

DA GRIN's LAST INTRVIEW WITH HIPHOPWORLD MAGAZINE:
EXCERPTS:
Hours before his accident, Da Grin had an interview with Hip On TV. These are the excerpts of the interview below;

Hip TV- How does it feel to be a nominee?
Da Grin- I feel so good, I feel so great because last year I was nominated for two categories but I didn't get any but now I feel like I am working. I feel like I am part of the Nigerian acts for me to be nominated for the Hip Hop World Awards. It's like a plus to my career, if I get any. But I hope to win. I really I want to have it all.

Hip TV- Can you recite some of the lines of Pon Pon Pon and infuse Hip Hop World in it?

E wo mi kin n fi fale/E wo mi ki n fi hale/ T?oba wad a bi iro, oya now Hip Hop World e je a jale.

Hip TV- Were you expecting a nomination?
Da Grin- Of course, most definitely. If you listened to the C.E.O album, you know definitely know what am talking about when it comes to rap albums.

Hip TV- Now that the nominees list is out, what do you think are your chances? Do you think can knockout the rest of the competition?
Da Grin- Of course now, like I said in the C.E.O album, I put in a lot of work. I talked about the streets, I talked about the hustle, and it?s not just the Moet, Hennessey thing. So with C.E.O I have got the chance.

Hip TV- Evaluate the chances of the other contenders in your category?
Da Grin- I like Cartiair?s album, he is a good rapper. I listened to a couple of songs on Ill Bliss?s album, it?s good. Kel, her album is good but it sounds like a mixtape. The C.E.O album is really on point. It talks about the streets, the ghetto, and the hustle. It talks about how people carry on with their lives and everything. It?s not just the Hennessey, Moet and Champagne thing. The C.E.O album is on point.

Hip TV- Okay, say something to your fans.
Da Grin- Yo people just vote for me. It?s www.hiphopworldawards.com. Vote for your boy Da Grin a.k.a Fi Mi Le Jo. I also want you to vote for my boy So Sick. (Goes ahead to sing the hook on Stay Fly).

GAGA FURIOUS WITH FOX.
Lady GaGa has expressed her anger after discovering that her recent performance on American Idol was edited down. The singer, who performed her new single 'Alejandro' on the programme, accused the network's bosses of "amateurly" editing out a minute and a half of the full six-and-a-half minute performance. She posted on Twitter: "Fox Poorly + Amateurly edited + cut my performance/musical arrangement on idol."Providing a web link to the full performance, she continued: "Watch the real version... Fox chopped up my performance in 4 places." GaGa is rumoured to have chosen fashion photographer Steven Klein to direct the music video for 'Alejandro'. Fox has yet to comment on the popstar's claims.

News Making Round...

YARA'ADUA DIED WHILE AS PRESIDENT.
It's no longer news that the much-anticipated death of President Umaru Yar'Adua finally came. It's not a praye neither a curse, but one thing was obvious from the onset.....he (Yar'Adua) was battling for life before he died. He gave up the ghost at 9pm Wednesday night (May 5) after a prolonged battle with heart problems. His wife was by his side when he died. He was 58 years old.
The Federal Government has declared today Thursday May 6th a work free day and also declared seven days of mourning. Yar'Adua will be buried at 2pm this afternoon in Katsina. Yar'Adua is the first Nigerian President to die in office.
Acting President Jonathan Goodluck was sworn-in as President at about 8am Thursday morning.

CONSERVATIVE ON COURSE IN UK.
The Conservatives have won the most MPs in the UK general election but fallen short of a majority, leading to the first hung parliament since 1974. As counting continues the Tories have gained 92 seats, Labour have lost 86 and the Lib Dems six, despite hopes of a breakthrough for the third party. The battle is now under way to see which leader can form a government. Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg said the situation was "fluid" but the Tories had the first right to seek to govern.

ZIMBABWE CONDEMNS INTERNATIONAL SANCTIONS.
Zimbabwe's three leading figures have condemned international sanctions on the country at a World Economic Forum conference in Tanzania. In a rare show of unity, President Robert Mugabe, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and his deputy Arthur Mutambara appealed for investment. Only Mr Tsvangirai had been expected to represent Zimbabwe at the forum in Dar es Salaam. But President Mugabe and Mr Mutambara made a surprise appearance. Despite the history of conflict, the three men put on a civil front, though Mr Mutambara did not resist a rather barbed reference to having gone to a previous World Economic Forum from a prison cell, says the BBC's Andrew Walker, who is in Dar es Salaam.

News Bitz....

India's space agency has abandoned its inaugural moon mission a day after scientists lost communication with the orbiting Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft. The unmanned craft was launched last October in what was billed as a two-year mission of exploration. The launch was seen as a major step for India as it seeks to keep pace with other space-faring Asian nations. Despite the termination of the mission, Isro chief G Madhavan Nair told reporters that the project was a great success and 95% of its objectives had been completed. Isro scientists said the agency was in talks with the US and Russia to track the spacecraft, which was orbiting 200km from the surface of the moon. Following its launch from the southern state of Andhra Pradesh last October, it was hoped the robotic probe would orbit the Moon, compile a three-dimensional atlas of the lunar surface and map the distribution of elements and minerals.

A US general in Afghanistan has called for a revised military strategy, suggesting the current one is failing. In a strategic assessment, Gen Stanley McChrystal said that, while the Afghan situation was serious, success was still achievable. The report has yet not been published, but sources say Gen McChrystal sees protecting the Afghan people against the Taliban as the top priority. The report does not carry a direct call for increasing troop numbers. Copies of the document have been sent to Nato Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and US Defence Secretary Robert Gates. The report came as further results from last week's presidential election were expected to be released, at 1230 GMT. President Hamid Karzai is leading so far. The independent Electoral Complaints Commission says that of more than 2,100 allegations of wrongdoing during voting and vote-counting, 618 have been deemed serious enough to affect the election's outcome, if proven.

South Africa's President Jacob Zuma has urged Zimbabwe's political rivals to work together if they are to see foreign aid restored. He said the power-sharing government must fully implement its agreement to "create confidence". He was speaking after holding talks with President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in Harare. Mr Tsvangirai's MDC party accuses Mr Mugabe of acting in bad faith and donors remain dubious. The former opposition Movement for Democratic Change says its activists continue to be harassed even after it joined the government in February. It also complains that it has not been consulted about key appointments, including the central bank governor and the attorney-general.

MY SCRIPT...Making More Sense Than Non-Sense

This is our weekly teaser where i expect you to comment on the issue discussed which obviously affect us in the society at-large. Here is the issue for the week....expecting your comments.

Making More Sense Than Non-Sense
Nigeria as a nation is characterized by systems which ordinarily should be responsible for its meaningful growth and advancement. Such sectors as Sports, Entertainment, are potential revenue boosters for any country with focus. The United States of America attained its respectable position and envy of other countries (developed) of the world, not merely because it is simply the Super-Power in-terms of technological progression. No! but for its Music and Movie industries are ranked the best and among the highest income earner for its economy. Across the black continent, specifically the West coast and Southern region, there have been flashes of promising economies in countries occupying these areas.
Focusing on the entertainment scene, this is an avenue which is highly sensitive in uniting people of different races and ethnic backgrounds. In the US, California (Los Angeles) is known as the entertainment capital of the entire world (just as Lagos is for the whole of Africa) due to its well established framework of the sectors. Such are practiced in the most formal manner. Back in Africa, it’s a good thing when imitating the “masters of the game”, but not making the best use out of it. Though Nigeria is a force to reckon-with on the black continent: in music, our artistes are top rated compared with their African counterparts while Nollywood is ranked third best in the world behind Hollywood an d Bollywood; we still have much to achieve.
It is no more gain-saying that Nigerian music artistes, through creative skills and marketing strategies, have attained an unprecedented top-spot in the music arena, not only on the African soil but around the world. This has given majority of music followers in the country reasons to patronize our own and once more put some level of confidence in the next generation that are yet to graduate onto the big stage. Music greats like 2Face Idibia, 9ice, P-Square, OJB Jezreel, amongst others, managed to create some niches for within the music empire, and are widely celebrated within and outside the borders of Nigeria. They are exceptional in meaningful lyrics, stage performance, quality productions, etc. however, some shortcomings have been observed with the so-called new generation artistes, who all in the name of Hiphop refused to blend-in positive values of our culture. Kudos to the likes of Lord of Ajasa, Da Grin, Cash 11, for exporting our local dialects in rap music thus giving the people what they really could relate-with. It is a shame therefore that some others do not seem it fit to be creative enough, instead they prefer propagating explicit contents with little or no sense in the lyrics.
Flipping over to the “Make Believe” sector, the Nigerian movie industry has equally experienced a “Boom” though less compared with the music arena. An avenue that could boast of production of almost 50 – 70 movies on monthly basis, spanning across the Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa genres. Although Nigeria’s Nollywood is ranked third World best, it translates to many things to different people. For some, it is as a result of the expansion experienced in Nollywood, others would want to argue on the exposure of our actors and actresses beyond the shores of the country, and it goes on and on and on……. To be candid and for the facts( as criteria for this part of the world), Nollywood is currently third best movie industry in the world, not for anything but for the volume of productions observed within the spate of months. The rating is not heavily based on the quality of the films or choice of locations, but for the fact that Nollywood remains an eye-opener for Africa to the rest of world. South Africa with its high level of exposure, its movie industry is way below ours. These commendations, however doesn’t mean that we have achieved the impossible. The overall quality of our productions: clean and sharp pictures, clear audio; still need to be looked into. Indigenous expertise as crew members should be allowed to discharge their duties effectively; not in the case where one man would be playing the lead-role actor, at same time directing the movie, managing the screenplay, and as well the producer. Things have to done the professional way and consequently regulate the production volume which must reduce to a reasonable number on monthly basis.
All other organs of the media must support this cause for a change of positive attitude and mentality, appreciating our rich cultural norms and values, thus encouraging its preservation. Necessary laws should be made to legalize the process and set-into-play as Check-and-Balance. Props to fellow MCs representing here on campus, keep doing your thang, positively though. Collectively, we can create genuine professionals in the Show Business (Comedy inclusive), it could definitely become a surprise money spinner for Nigeria especially in the midst of the meltdown of world economy.
